In 2004 we worked with the local NGO network in tsunami relief activities. During the aftermath of the tsunami people who live in the coastal areas of the Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts had no place to go and could not meet basic survival needs such as food and water. Working with other local NGOs, we helped to gather the affected people in schools, churches, halls or any other building that provided shelter and provide them with the basic necessities of food, clean drinking water, medicine and clothing for 3 weeks.
The income of the family has stopped completely for around 6 months to one year. These children were otherwise having no way to go to school. HELP adopted 60 Tsunami affected children Under the HELP Training Center and given full support to make them school going. We provided them with educational support, school fees, Free Tuition Classes, etc.
Under the HELP Training Center at Kootapuli , HELP gave skill training for 50 Tsunami affected youths as alternative income generation activity. 50% have shifted their income generation activity into jobs at office, betty shop, etc. rest of the 50% have again started their fishing work as govt has supported them with boats, fishing nets, etc.
HELP & Zion Educational Trust jointly gave skill training for 40 Tsunami affected Girls and 20 boys on Early Childhood Care and ITES. 35 of them have got sustainable income.
The most important thing in my life is to take care of my mummy because she doesn't have anybody who can take care of her.
